London’s sewer system has won international acclaim at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin.

A photo of an underground reservoir in Finsbury Park, London, has been named the winner of the 2016 Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, which took place at the festival in Berlin this week.

The haunting image, taken by photographer Matt Emmett, offers a rare look at London’s underground waterworks. The tunnels were built by the East London Waterworks Company in 1868, and were used right up until the 21st century.

The photo is one of 20 shortlisted for the awards this year. Four of the photos came from the UK, while the remaining 16 were taken all over the world, from Serbia to Sao Paulo.

The shortlist — which was released on November 18 2016 — was decided by a panel of experts at the festival, one of whom said Emmett’s winning photo reminded her of paintings by Italian artist Piranesi.
