Turn Your iPhone into a Game Boy

How do you feel when people mention the Game Boy to you? You’ll either rejoice and reminisce, or it will just fade into insignificance as you’ve been brought up on a new generation of console. For all you retro console enthusiasts, get excited. Be very excited!

Nintendo’s 8-bit device is coming back – to your smartphone at least.

Renamed the Smart Boy, a hardware case supporting an iPhone will be released that turns your phone into the handheld console that once gave you endless hours of fun reviving classics such as Tetris and The Legend of Zelda.

Stick your phone in the front, your game in the back, open the app and away you go.

The console, which was originally an April Fool’s joke that proved so popular it became a real project, will be developed by Hyperkin and will feature everything we loved about the original, including the eight-way D-pad; two action buttons; a start and select button; and a battery that can be charged through the phone itself.

All of this contributes to gameplay that will show on the iPhone screen through a downloadable app, which will have the option to save and cheat.

Hyperkin’s product developer, Chris Gallizzi said:

“We wanted to create a retro device that can be easily adapted into any modern gamer’s arsenal of devices.”

At the moment the plans are to build the Smart Boy for the iPhone 6 Plus model only.

Although there is still no release date, at least Game Boy fans can rest assured that it’s no joke.

Computer geeks of the world, this is great news! Old and new combining to make something definitely exciting and potential incredible. If you’re a big fan of gaming, then check out our Game Design course today!
