Job of the Week – Biological scientists and biochemists

For those of you who fancy a career as a Biological scientists and biochemists there is no need to worry as over the next 5 years there will be 116 new jobs created in the Sheffield City Region – that’s not even to mention that some of the current workforce will also need replacing. In the Sheffield City Region average earnings for Biological scientists and biochemists is £17.98 per hour. Starting salaries for Biological scientists and biochemists vary massively.
As a Postdoctoral researcher or research fellow, you may earn from £29,000 to £36,000 a year. However, a research scientist in industry could earn from £23,000 to £42,000 a year.
As a Biologist you could also venture into the job roles of University Lecturer or as a professor/senior staff member in research institutions and industry. A University Lecturer may earn around £36,000 a year. Where Professors and senior staff in research institutions and industry could earn up to £60,000 or more.

If you choose to go do the Biochemist route then as a trainee clinical biochemist on the NHS Scientist Training Programme your salary would be around £25,000 a year. Or as a qualified clinical biochemist in the NHS, you would start at Band 6 earning between £26,041 and £34,876. With experience you could apply for jobs at Band 7 and earn up to £40,964.
