Top 5 Bakeries in Sheffield
A chilly, autumnal Saturday afternoon. Nip yourself down to one of these fine bakeries and huddle round the fireplace for the rest of the day. Believe, you won’t be able to move once you’ve had a bite!
- Forge Bakehouse
Forge Bakehouse are located on Abbeydale Road and moved to their current larger location earlier this year, which has given them the space to house the bakery and open a café too. Expect to find a wide range of attractively shaped breads which are all made using artisan methods – spelt, rye, varieties of sourdough and seeded loaves.
2. 7 Hills Bakery
Like Forge Bakehouse, 7 Hills Bakery on Sharrow Vale Road offers up an artisan wonderland with long-fermented breads like spelt, rye, and walnut sourdough loaves along with sweet buttermilk tea cakes, brownies and date and orange scones. The bakery is on-site and they sell a good selection of fruit and veg, as well as running a café too.
3. Depot Bakery
The Depot Bakery (owned by Tamper cafe) can be found in the city centre off Arundel street, housed in a rustically refurbished characterful industrial space. There’s a varied selection, from a variety of sourdough, baguettes, bagels and sweet muffins, chocolate lamingtons and doughnuts of regularly changing flavours. Fillings have ranged from mango and passionfruit, cookies and cream, to raspberry cheesecake and mint choc!
4. Gerry’s Bakery and Coffee House
Gerry’s is positioned on Walkley’s popular South Road high street, an ideal spot for passing trade. I suggest you get down early as the hand-crafted bread sells like hot cakes, while the range – including cider & apple, fig & apple, khorasan & date loaf, honey cakes and oat and barberry biscuits – changes regularly. There are a handful of tables so you can sit in and enjoy a coffee with a slice of something sweet, a scone or brownie perhaps.
5. Turner’s Bakery
Family run business Turner’s bakery is based in Nether Edge and with over 50 years in business they know their stuff. You can expect to get decent traditional baking here with a range including tinned white, wholemeal and granary loaves, french sticks, oven bottom breadcakes as well as delectable pastries to choose from with, almond slices, egg custards, eclairs and flapjacks.
